THAT’S FOR BABIES
Somebody is in a rush to develop
up—till she isn’t.
On Prunella’s birthday she decides
that she is “a BIG child now” and proceeds to reject all method of things and
actions she decides she’s outgrown. “That’s for infants!” Pru repeatedly
declares, even discarding “her favourite doll, Speaking Sally…in a field of outdated
toys.” The depiction of the doll makes it look like a sentient, oddly small
particular person, lending a maybe unintentionally creepy feeling to the story as Pru
begins to remorse her rejection of Sally when she will get bored after spurning many
alternatives for enjoyable, together with a tea get together that Speaking Sally suggests from
the toy field. Then nighttime comes, and with it a lightning storm. Frightened
Pru retrieves Sally from the field of toys, asking “Sally, are you scared in
there?” After which she reassures the doll, “Don’t be scared! I’m right here!” Looking for
extra reassurance for herself, Pru results in her mother and father’ mattress, after which
all through the next day she fortunately performs with Sally, embracing actions
she’d beforehand eschewed and acknowledging that looking for consolation is each “for
infants…and large youngsters like me!” Pru
and her household current white, as does Sally, and all show snub noses that
give them a piglike air. Whereas eagerness to develop up is frequent in youngsters, each
textual content and artwork fail to create a compelling story round this sense.
