STILL I MISS YOU

Two former lovers handle each other after considered one of them has
died.

Any and each novel will ask
that, whereas studying, you droop your disbelief. A novel through which one of many
principal characters has already died, and continues to talk from past the grave,
asks with a bit extra urgency. That’s the self-esteem of Pedrosa’s (In Your Fingers,
2018) newest novel to seem in English. There’s no plot right here, no actual motion.
As an alternative, in alternating chapters, a person and a lady—previously lovers—handle one
one other in lengthy, stream-of-consciousness passages that describe their
relationship, their lives, and fairly a couple of extra summary concepts, too. It’s the
lady who has died. “I died when a drifter received misplaced on the way in which to my uterus,”
she explains. “I died as a result of my physique determined to supply a brand new life and screwed
it up.” And her counterpart? “Did you concentrate on me as you had been dying?” he
asks. However many of the novel is way much less easy. Each characters commerce
in lyrical abstractions as they wax on and on about no matter involves thoughts. A
typical passage: “By way of you, I existed earlier than I used to be even born, within the harsh,
secret vocabulary of a battle that now not belonged to me….” These meditations
develop tiresome moderately rapidly. Unsupported by any motion, the load of the
novel sags closely within the center. Pedrosa has labored as a journalist in her
native Portugal: Some journalistic precision may need helped sharpen this
hazy novel, a minimum of sufficient to convey it into focus.

An extra of navel-gazing rapidly grows tiresome.
