Greatest Translated E-book Award 2020 Winners
The award in fiction goes to EEG, written by Daša Drndić, translated from Croatian by Celia Hawkesworth, and printed by New Instructions. EEG was Drndić’s final novel and certainly one of many translated by Hawkesworth. Notably, Drndić is the primary feminine creator to win the fiction class since Can Xue received in 2015 for her ebook The Final Lover, translated by Annelise Finegan Wasmoen.

The fiction jury writes: “Dasa Drndic in her encyclopedic, panoramic novel, beautifully translated by Celia Hawkesworth, calls forth the ghosts of Europe’s 20th century in a biting indictment towards complacency and the consolation and comfort of forgetting. A frenzy of observations and deeply researched info, seething with rage and urgency, it’s a haunting and masterful remaining work.
“A remaining work that continues on like a river. It rushes, rages by means of time, gathering detritus and eroding the panorama, shifting and altering at each bend. The poetry jury writes: “What’s to not savor in Etal Adnan’s philosophical and exact, but intensely transferring Time, thoughtfully and superbly translated by Sarah Riggs? Adnan doesn’t shrink back from questions of mortality…certainly, the ebook’s opening stanza tells us, ‘I say that I’m not afraid / of dying as a result of I haven’t / but had the expertise / of demise.’ Later within the ebook, we study ‘There are arteries, / veins, and different channels / that each one result in demise.’ But regardless of all of it, we’re requested to contemplate that ‘Some flowers / wilt tombs whereas / orchards start / to blossom.’
