The fiction jury writes: “Dasa Drndic in her encyclopedic, panoramic novel, beautifully translated by Celia Hawkesworth, calls forth the ghosts of Europe’s 20th century in a biting indictment towards complacency and the consolation and comfort of forgetting. A frenzy of observations and deeply researched info, seething with rage and urgency, it’s a haunting and masterful remaining work.

“A remaining work that continues on like a river. It rushes, rages by means of time, gathering detritus and eroding the panorama, shifting and altering at each bend. It smothers and subsumes, with palpable anger because it makes an attempt to drown the reader time and again earlier than granting them air on the final doable second. There could also be no higher descriptor for Hawkesworth’s translation of Drndić’s prose than torrential.”

And the poetry award goes to Time, written by Etel Adnan, translated from French by Sarah Riggs, and printed by Nightboat. “That is the second latest main award for Sarah Riggs’s translation of Adnan’s Time, following the Griffin Poetry Prize and a nomination as a Lambda Literary Award finalist.” Although this can be a translation from the French, Lebanese-American creator Adnan additionally writes in English and Arabic.

Time by Etel Adnan. Best Translated Book Award 2020 WinnersThe poetry jury writes: “What’s to not savor in Etal Adnan’s philosophical and exact, but intensely transferring Time, thoughtfully and superbly translated by Sarah Riggs? Adnan doesn’t shrink back from questions of mortality…certainly, the ebook’s opening stanza tells us, ‘I say that I’m not afraid / of dying as a result of I haven’t / but had the expertise / of demise.’ Later within the ebook, we study ‘There are arteries, / veins, and different channels / that each one result in demise.’ But regardless of all of it, we’re requested to contemplate that ‘Some flowers / wilt tombs whereas / orchards start / to blossom.’

“Certainly, the poems in these six sequences bloom with the sweetness the world has to supply in addition to those that have created these human-made items by means of the ages: Homer, Issa, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith, Shostakovich. Love, demise, and the better cosmos interweave the material of our lives: ‘there are loves that develop / like cancers. We connect ourselves / to them just like the physique to its sickness, / the moon to the earth.’ And although we’re advised that ‘time can’t be translated,’ Sarah Riggs has executed a masterful job rendering Adnan’s gorgeous truths.”
