Mariana nervously walks to her new classroom with Papa. To calm her, Papa provides Mariana a small pink field however warns that she not open it till she should: if she’s “unhappy, scared, or fearful.” Nearly instantly, Mariana opens the field and feels a rush of air and a sensation like a kiss; readers see collaged floral designs floating round Mariana. She feels higher, however an unfriendly classmate sends her to the field once more. This time, one thing “like a heat hug” emerges. When Mariana creates paintings that garners admiration, she realizes her spirits have lifted with out the field. At recess, the imply scholar falls, so Mariana opens the field to share its energy with him. It’s left as much as readers’ imaginations what’s contained in the field—or whether or not there’s something inside in any respect. Is it actually magical, or is Mariana’s personal company at work?
