Roberto Clemente received two World Collection with the Pirates, he received the Rawlings Gold Glove Award 12 instances, and he had three,000 hits. His achievements absolutely would have continued had it not been for his tragic accident. A shining star on the sphere, his efforts off the sphere have been equally spectacular. He arrived from Puerto Rico to the Main Leagues and have become a logo of the working class. His thick accent and Puerto Rican heritage typically made him the topic of ridicule from reporters, who quoted him with phonetic spellings. In ’69, Clemente was quoted as saying, “The farther away you writers keep, the higher I prefer it. why? Since you’re attempting to create a foul picture of me… You do it as a result of I’m black and Puerto Rican, however I’m proud to be Puerto Rican.”
